Automotive sector needs to look at safety of its workers: report
How safe are workers in the factories of automotive supply chain firms and automobile brands and is there a need to relook at safety protocols on the shop floor? The number of accidents in automotive supply chain firms increased from 799 in FY2021-22 and 1,345 in FY2022-23 to 1,597 in FY2023-24, according to a study by Safe In India (SII)—an organization focusing on the safety of automotive industry workers. However, industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), strongly refutes any allegations and says every safety incident cannot be traced to the vehicle manufacturer.

In the past, State undertakings introduced many new buses annually in semi-urban to urban regions, but this trend has declined, opening opportunities for private transportation to fill the void.

Budget falls short in pushing domestic EVs
One of this year’s Budget proposals was to boost the supply and manufacturing ecosystem for electric vehicles. To this end, it exempted customs duty on import of the minerals — lithium and cobalt, as also extended the concessional customs duty on import of lithium-ion cells until March 31, 2026. India relies on lithium imports, which is key component of EV batteries. So the duty cut is a welcome step.
